As every year since 2002, in the week going from 16 to 22 of September, cities and towns of all Europe celebrate the European Mobility Week, the world’s largest event concerning sustainable mobility.

The overall aim of this campaign – supported by the European Commission, DG Environment – is to raise public and institutional awareness on the need to act against the pollution caused by the increasing motorised traffic in urban areas, thus fostering citizens’ sensitiveness towards the connection between alternative mobility and a higher urban life quality.

To reach this goal, the European Mobility Week acts in three directions: 1) Encourage the use of alternative forms of transport and travel other than private cars; 2) Inform the public on what concerns long-term sustainable mobility and on the risks connected with traffic pollution in cities,  and what’s going on to fight it so far; 3) Present the cities in a new light, that is the one of reduced motorised traffic.

Every year the European Mobility Week introduces a focal theme out of the various issues related to sustainable mobility. This year’s theme will be “Travel Smarter, Live Better”, which aims are to shed  light on the dangers of motorised traffic and its pollutants to public health, and meanwhile to encourage local authorities to promote the positive impacts of soft modes of transport on public health.

No doubt that SWOMM endorses this initiative: active travel – either by biking or simply walking – is always a good way to keep fit and healthy.
