SWOMM 2010 – Transport & Environment in Mountain Areas – 14 December 2010, FAO, Rome
The sixth SWOMM – Scientific Workshop on Mountain Mobility and Transport – will be held this year on 14 December at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla. The SWOMM 2010 is promoted by the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea of Italy and it is organized in cooperation with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat – FAO, the SWOMM Scientific Secretariat and other scientific partners. The SWOMM 2010 will be organized this year within the framework of the AlpCheck2 project of the “Alpine Space” ETC Programme.
SWOMM 2010 will analyze in particular the existing link between the environmental impact of transport in fragile mountain ecosystems and the economic and social benefits that transport and other activities can deliver to mountain territories. Experiences from mountain zones worldwide will be presented by a panel of experts in the fields of ecology, transport, economics and social development policies. Proposals for effective policies to manage the delicate interface between transport & the environment will be discussed during the open round table.
Participation of representatives from research bodies and relevant institutions is expected, including the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, the Mountain Partnership (FAO), the Veneto Region as well as other experts and European authorities.

Mountain ecosystem is a fragile and ecologically sensitive and over exploited and even polluted in the recent past due to high pressure of tourism. I hail from Blue Mountains (Nilgiris) of TamilNadu,India and experienced the problems of noise pollution and illumination at night. The workshop on Mountain mobility transport is an eye opener and timely and hopefully finds solution for a responsive and ecologically sustainable transport system.
